Critical Conditions Survival Course

The Advanced course is only available to those who have previously completed the Basic course and that feel confident in their ability to build-onto and test their previously acquired knowledge and skills. This course is an excellent way to increase your level of resilience and preparedness. Much new knowledge and many new skills are presented in this Advanced course.
This is a weekend course with the training scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
​This course is scenario-based. It will require the participants to complete a series of individual and group tasks in order to reach a final common goal. Everyone attending will have a chance to use their skills and knowledge in order to propel the scenario forward.​

Content
Emergency equipment and preparedness
-
packing a go bag, caring for and protecting your gear, field hygiene.​
Advanced stop-bleed skills
-
confirmation of trauma skills, low-light and intermediate technique suturing.
Map / compass / GPS navigation
-
map and compass confirmation, introductory GPS navigation, 5 point GPS nav course.
Bushcraft
-
individual and group shelters, further camp improvement and development, fires by many methods, ground-to-air signals, water filtration methods, unknown plant edibility test.
Situational considerations
-
group movement formations according to topography and task, steep descend / ascend by rope with and without cargo.
​Chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear (CBRN)

respirator donn / doff review, live smoke drill.


Overview
Physical Health: Please appreciate that once the field portion commences each participant will be required to carry a 40 lbs backpack for at least 5 km cross-country over the course of the weekend.​
Driving and Rest Policy: It will be ensured that those who are driving from the course location back home after course completion will have a minimum of 8 consecutive hours of time set aside for sleep every night.​
​
Food and Water: Humanitarian-relief field rations including high-calorie survival snacks will be supplied to all participants for the duration of the course. Clean, drinkable water will also be supplied to everyone on a regular basis.

Restrooms: There will be access to a porta-potty.

What To Expect
In order to preserve the quality of the training we provide, we will produce a limited amount of information in regards to the context of this training. Further information will be provided to participants prior to course start.

Day 1 - The first day will be spent practicing field skills that were introduced during the Basic course. As long as there is no fire ban we will be able to set our signal fires ablaze and keep small fires going in the camp area.
​
Day 2 - The morning of day 2 the field-exercise will start at which point the participants will run through a 24-hour-long scenario that will test their existing skills as well as introduce many new ones along the way.
​
Day 3 - The scenario will propel forward until approximately lunch time, after which we will clean-up, pack-up and head home.
Equipment
The following items are required by everyone attending the advanced course;

60 litre or larger rucksack

Hydration bladder and a water bottle or thermos together being able to hold at least 2 litres

Clothing for the forecasted weather conditions. Please bring a base layer, an intermediate layer and an outer layer of clothing as well as undergarments for 3 days

Rain-gear such as a 2-piece suit or a poncho is a must
-
Basic hygiene kit. Wet-ones or baby wipes work great

Spare set of clothing in personal vehicle

Waterproof hiking shoes or boots

Head-lamp with spare batteries

Work gloves

Wristwatch

We can rent out rucksacks as needed. Included as part of the rucksack rental is either a hydration bladder or a thermos, either of which will be yours to keep after use. To rent our rucks please go to the register page.

If you would like to bring any of your own survival items to try them out you are welcome to do so but please be aware that certain items such as camp stoves and sleeping bags will not be allowed during the scenario portion of the course.
All other Items that are required to complete any of the tasks or skills will be supplied. This includes field tools, medical supplies, tarps and consumables such as glow-sticks and cordage.
